Professor Hamid Qayyum Former Professor and Head of Department, Orthopedics Surgery Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex, Lahore
Professor Hamid Qayyum passed away on 5th August 2015 after a fatal myocardial infarction. He was born on 23rd March 1949 in Lahore. He received his early education from Central Model School Lahore and later studied at Government College Lahore from where he completed his F.Sc. He attended King Edward Medical College Lahore, receiving his MBBS degree in 1970. After completing his undergraduate training in Pakistan, he moved to New York where he was enrolled in residency and fellowship in orthopedics. He was awarded Diplomat American Board of Orthopedics and Fellowship of Academy of Orthopedics and went in to private practice in Rochester, New York before returning to Pakistan in 1983. On his return, he joined the Punjab Health Department as Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. In June 1994 he shifted to Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex Lahore as professor and headed the department of orthopaedic surgery till his retirement in March 2009. During this time he also served as the administrator of Shaikh Zayed Hospital from October 1997 to March 2001.
Prof. Qayyum was an exceptional blend of a person with dry humour and devotion to duty. A mentor of countless trainees in orthopedics, he displayed an extraordinary commitment to his patients and students. He valued and respected every individual who came in contact with him. Although an outstanding orthopedic surgeon, he would humbly give credit for his success to his staff at Shaikh Zayed Hospital. We have lost an excellent clinician, a brilliant teacher and a wonderful colleague. May Allah grant him peace in paradise, Aameen.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
